Once widespread in Luxembourg, the Little Owl inspired many legends, as this owl species often nested in or near cemeteries, from where its calls could be heard at night. As the bird of prey also hunts insects attracted by light sources, it sometimes lands in front of a window and peers into a living room with its large, round eyes, scaring the inhabitants. No wonder it was once called “Doudevull” (bird of the dead) in Luxembourg. The Little Owl used to be widespread.

Today, however, Luxembourg’s smallest owl species is severely threatened because its breeding and hunting grounds are becoming increasingly rare due to the growth of towns and cities. Orchards, hedges and crevices in trees or buildings where the Little Owl nests are becoming increasingly rare.

The municipality of Weiler-la-Tour has dedicated a nature trail to the owl species, where you can learn a lot about the habitat of the Little Owl on display boards, as well as about the protection measures to preserve this species. If you look around carefully, you can spot potential breeding sites for the Little Owl and the nesting boxes that have been placed on various trees.
