Anyone who has spent a summer holiday in Provence knows the power and picturesque beauty of nature … The Villa Vauban is an art museum that brings together collections of ancient and contemporary works of art (painting, graphics, sculpture, photography, 17th to 21st centuries).

The exhibitions shown here are created from the municipal collection, which focuses on Dutch painting of the “Golden Age” and French landscape and history painting of the 19th century. Paintings, sculptures and graphic works by European artists from the 17th to the 19th century complete the collection. Since 1 June, the Villa Vauban has been open again and attracts visitors with a new permanent exhibition

Explore the new permanent exhibition: A walk through art – European painting and sculpture, 17th to 19th century

The new permanent exhibition at Villa Vauban takes visitors young and old on a journey through three centuries of artistic creation: from the Dutch 17th century to the dreamy places in Italy to French painting in the mid-19th century. In addition to the styles and epochs with many masterpieces, the exhibition also features small formats and miniatures as well as a spectacular room dedicated to the acquisitions made by Jean-Pierre Pescatore, benefactor and benefactor of the city, at the auction of works owned by King William II of the Netherlands in 1850.

The great diversity of themes and artistic styles is shown at the beginning in a video. An immersive video projection at the beginning of the tour puts visitors in the mood of the works and guides them through the art collection.

“Walk the art

During this guided tour, works of art can be discovered that have been specially created for public spaces. Most of the existing monuments were built in Luxembourg between the mid-19th century and the early 2000s. It was not until the 1990s that art was created exclusively for public space, meaning that works of art were placed in the urban space solely for their aesthetic value, without a culture of commemoration.

Reservations are recommended to guarantee participation in the tour. Next dates: 20.06. (FR), 18.07. (FR), 01.08. (EN), 29.08. (LU). Time: 10.30. Meeting point: Place Guillaume II, in front of the Town Hall
