It is one of Luxembourg’s best-known excursion destinations: Vianden with its impressive castle, built between the 11th and 14th centuries on the foundations of Roman and Carolingian fortifications and developed over the centuries into one of the largest and most beautiful feudal residences of the Romanesque and Gothic periods in Europe. In the 19th century, however, the castle fell into disrepair.
After the castle became state property in 1977, it was restored to its former glory and is now one of the most important architectural monuments in Europe. Cultural events such as concerts and exhibitions also take place here regularly. For example, the best works of the 14th International Caricature/Cartoon Competition will be exhibited here from 8 May until 31 May. This year, artists from all over the world took part in the competition with the theme of artificial intelligence (AI).
Vianden is also home to Luxembourg’s only cable lift. The chairlift, which was completely renovated in 2006, takes you from the valley, situated at 220m, to an altitude of 440m. From there you can enjoy a wonderful panoramic view over the whole town, including the castle and the dam.
The whole area around Vianden and especially the Our valley is a paradise for hikers. A total of around 150 kilometres of hiking trails criss-cross the region. Challenging mountain bike trails can also be found here.
The public swimming pool and the climbing park are also extremely popular. However, the public swimming pool is currently being renovated and is closed this year.
